Horrible Bosses (2011). Directed by Seth Gordon, and written by Michael Markowitz. The film centres around three friends (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day) who each work for a problematic boss. After some advice from a criminal (Jamie Foxx) they agree to murder each others bosses, to avoid being connected back to the crime. Horrible Bosses has a couple of things going for it. Firstly, 99% of the population have probably had a boss they will have dreamed of murdering, so that engages some empathy. Secondly, the bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Anniston, and Colin Farrell) are all varyingly amusing, particularly with the various actors playing against type. The problems with Horrible Bosses are also twofold. Firstly, none of the "heroes" are particularly funny or likeable, with the possible exception of Jason Bateman. Ironically by the end of the film I wanted to murder Charlie Day. Secondly, the writing is patchy, and did not provoke a great deal of laughs from me. Overall that leaves a fairly average comedy, but again one that is likely to strike a chord with someone who has had to put up with an insufferable boss. Recommended for black comedy fans who are stuck for anything else to watch. 3/5 (Average)
