The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Based on the Marvel comics and directed by Marc Webb. The film starts with a flashback to Peter Parker's parents, specifically his father and the cryptic background to why he leaves his son behind. The film then switches to present day where Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) is fighting crime, and also fighting his doubts about whether to pursue a relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Regular readers will know that I'm no fan of formulaic comic book films, and I only went to see this due to (a) a lack of anything else being on and (b) this being the best rated of what was on. I was pleasantly surprised with the first 60-90 minutes of this though (yes, it's a long film at 142 minutes), it had story, it was fun, it was entertaining. Garfield is perfectly fine as Peter Parker and his super alter-ego (but no Tobey Maguire, YMMV). Jamie Foxxoxoxoxox is also fine as the put upon nerd who you can guess is on a path to trouble (and makes a pretty good nemesis). For me the film fell down after what felt like the final showdown when it introduced another two villains and then felt clumsily ended. Inevitably the non-picky comic book and formulaic action fans will love this. 3/5 (Average)
