Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Based on the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and directed by Doug Liman. Set in the near future, the Earth has been invaded by a race of aliens known as the mimics. The mimics have taken most of Europe, but mankind is finally starting to fight back with soldiers utilising an exoskeleton. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is asked to report from a huge offensive that's due to take place the following day, but he tries to blackmail his way out of it to avoid being involved in any combat. He is then arrested as a deserter, reduced to the rank of private, and forced to join a squad of soldiers shipping out to the front. Edge of Tomorrow is a pleasant enough action film that has a Groundhog Day style story, that is the character is stuck in a time loop. The loop element is used to good effect, without feeling too much like the recycling of the previous film (the setting is certainly markedly different!). Cruise is good as the initially rather arrogant and lazy Major Cage. Emily Blunt plays the other leading role, and she is excellent. They are supported by a good cast, including Bill Paxton in a familiar military role, albeit a less cowardly one. The film has good effects, and a good score. Most importantly the story feels fresh, and is detailed, as long as you don't mind a bit of artistic license. For me it was never quite brilliant, but it was certainly very good. Recommended for fans of science fiction action that like a good story as well. 4/5 (Good)
