1. Buying Spore from the EA Store via Direct Download. Currently estimated at 17 hours to download.

2. Not having checked the PC World site, where their Collect@Store version is £29.99 versus the £40 I paid.

Arg.

Digital distribution pricing disgusts me. I understand why they can't sell Spore digitally for say £15, but to charge more than any retailer would is ridiculous. Especially when it presents such an enormously higher profit margin to them than retail distribution.

I'm not trying to take the piss, but effectively you ended up paying £10 over the odds for a game that you won't have a DVD, box or manual for (not physically anyway), will take 17 hours+ to download and will count towards any bandwidth limitations your ISP may or may not enforce on you. Finally, their distribution costs are minimal compared to a retail copy.

I'm not saying that you made a bad choice, I just think that the digital distribution model for PC software is fucking madness.

Amen to that brother!

The big problem is that software houses for the most part daren't anger their distribution channel, so I'm guessing for the foreseeable future it will be RRP all the way.

And believe me if I'd seen the PC World I wouldn't have been such an impatient twat and bought it via this system :-D

Definitely. I think that with the success and popularity of console digital distribution, the days of Game and Gamestation are numbered...

From memory, I think that used titles are most lucrative for them. There's a funny Penny Arcade strip where a gaming store manager is sitting on a throne of money and a customer mentions digital distribution ;)

I'd be interested to know what you think of Spore. I think I'm the only person who is indifferent towards it! I suspect that if I were to play it I'd really like it, but I'm almost reluctant to. I'm more excited about STALKER - Clear Sky despite it not reviewing particularly well. Although Play have let me down and not delivered it today!

I have to say I'm buying Spore purely based on the limited reviews. Hopefully it's not a lemon!

I didn't get too far in the original Stalker because the patch killed all my save games, and I was so annoyed I gave up playing it. I might go back to it now though, as my annoyance has subsided a bit. Although I found it a bit too open ended.

I might go back to Crysis as well, as I bought a new graphics card. For the life of me though I can't remember if I finished it or not.

I read a few posts on EA's bizarre pricing structure. It's very bizarre.

All about not pissing off the current distribution chain, but perhaps in a few years things will change.
