The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009). Written and directed by Tom Six. The crazy and creepy Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser), world renowned expert in separating conjoined twins, kidnaps two US women and a Japanese tourist. He then joins them together to form... yep, a human centipede. I suspect I don't need to tell you any more. The Human Centipede is pretty much "car accident" type viewing, that is the content is utterly vile in places, but relies on that human curiosity to not tear itself away from the awful. I should add that I didn't watch The Human Centipede in its entirety, and in the particularly unpleasant bits I just skipped ahead - I suspect I didn't miss much, and certainly got the gist of what was going on. Despite my love of horror films I haven't been much of a fan of the latest wave of torture films. Rather than relying on clever story telling and atmosphere it's just "balls out" shocks, with each film trying to be more unpleasant than the last, to the point where you have something like this. The Human Centipede pretty much trumps most of the mainstream films in that respect. Perhaps there's an element of art in the story, black black art, but if there is it gets lost in the nastiness. I'm sure you can guess whether this is your sort of film, and I only hope that it isn't for most people. No doubt the majority of viewings are based on idle curiosity, and I should warn you that it does meet the awful expectation, and goes beyond it. Overall I just found it an abhorrent film with more or less nothing in the way of redeeming features. Perhaps I shouldn't score it, based on not having seen all of it, but even so I have formed a view, which is... 1/5 (Awful).
