Who would you consider the most overrated musician, and why?

Describing things as overrated and underrated... it's a difficult topic. It implies that you know better than the masses, and who can judge that, assuming it's even possible to judge? And ultimately if someone enjoys what they're listening to does it matter whether their taste is deemed as refined or not?

I've mentioned it before, but I think the overall quality of music is on the decline. The inventiveness of music seems to have suffered, if you look at the charts now versus 10.. 15... 20 years ago. I feel I was lucky growing up through the 80s and 90s when music was still pretty great and easy to find.

I suspect more of the inventive musicians have gone underground, as the big labels slowly degrade, making their music difficult to find - short of ploughing through hours and hours of music.

C'mon, just say Bono and have done.

Heh, well I'm sure there's a lot worse in the charts.

I used to really like U2, but after something like Zooropa I didn't hear another decent album.

Well the masses listen to commercial radio, which is highly prescribed and often repetitive in the extreme. So I don't find it hard to judge, or feel that I know better. Listening to something outside what the corporate media and the big record companies want to push on you gives one that right.

There can be arguments over whether one indie act has more substance than another, or whether one blues artist is more 'authentic' than another. But I don't really hold with the notion that a serious music fan can't question a taste for Bieber or Gaga or P Diddy
