Tropa de Elite 2 (2007) (AKA The Elite Squad 2). Directed and co-written by José Padilha. The story follows on from the first film, with Nascimento (Wagner Moura) in charge of BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police). A botched operation at a prison, caused by his subordinate Matias (André Ramiro), causes both Nascimento and Matias to be "promoted" into roles outside of BOPE. Meanwhile a corrupt section of the State Military Police is moving into the slums that have been freed of drug gangs, and are in turn forcing those within the community to pay bribes. Although Tropa de Elite 2 does not feel as entertaining as the first film, it does feel like a reasonably realistic portrayal of the issues at hand i.e. serious corruption within the police and government. In reality it's hard to say whether anyone cares enough to fight the corruption internally, like some of the characters within the film. Those who want to watch should be prepared for some fairly lengthy narrative sections, covering the political issues, and the family problems of the police involved. Some of the acting and direction leaves a little to be desired, feeling more over dramatised than natural. The soundtrack is reasonable, but not outstanding. Recommended for those who want to understand some of the systemic issues in Brazil. 3/5 (Average)
