Limitless (2011). Directed by Neil Burger and based on the novel The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn. The story is set in New York City, and centres around failing writer Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper). Eddie's more than just failing at writing, as at the start of the film his girlfriend leaves him, he's out of money, and his rent is overdue. By coincidence he bumps into his ex brother-in-law, who tells him he has a drug which can turn his life around. The premise of Limitless is a good one, a drug that continually puts you in the zone, and much more. Of course there are the inevitable moral repercussions that are the roller-coaster ride of the film. The difficulty with any "one premise" film like this is maintaining the pace, and although at times it feels like it isn't going to make it, it does pick up again and kept me hooked. Bradley Cooper is well cast as the troubled and smug Eddie. DeNiro, who plays a business connection, has a throwaway performance. If you can stand the MTV style and science fiction storyline (albeit more fiction than science) you should enjoy this. 4/5 (Good)
