Film Review: Drive (2011)
Drive (2011). Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and based on the book by James Sallis. The film starts with getaway driver (Ryan Gosling) pulling up to the location of a burglary. The burglars do what they need to do, and get into the car with seconds to spare. The driver then spends 10 action packed minutes trying to evade the police. Drive is a curious film. It has an 80s feel to it in both style and music. Gosling's performance is mostly understated yet brilliant. The film moves from slow to fast paced, yet the slow sections are thick with atmosphere. The soundtrack is excellent, featuring a couple of tracks by Brian Eno, and some original tracks by Cliff Martinez, among others. The film certainly isn't for everybody, and those who dislike slow paced and/or violent films should avoid. Those who like them though may well get a kick out of it, and I think it's a rare gem. 5/5 (Excellent)
