Film Review: Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The First Avenger. Directed by Joe Johnston and based on the Marvel comics character. The film starts during the second world war, with Nazi officer Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) breaking into an old Norwegian church to steal an artefact which contains enormous power. Meanwhile in New York City the very weedy Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is desperate to join his friends and enlist in the army. A scientist overhears his desire to fight the Nazis, and recruits him for an experiment. For me Captain America: The First Avenger was somewhat head and shoulders above the average comic book conversion. It mostly helps that there's a fairly rich story that does not rely entirely on the superhero. Still, Chris Evans gives a reasonable performance, or at least as good as you can expect in the role. The CG body change for the character is seamlessly done, and lends a lot to the believability. You could certainly do a lot worse for a comic book hero film, but don't expect too much. 4/5 (Good)
