Film Review: Kill List (2011)
Kill List (2011). Directed by Ben Wheatley. The story centres around two British ex-soldiers (Neil Maskell and Michael Smiley) who have resorted to working as contract killers. Set against depressing and volatile home lives, the two take on a job from a strange character that requires killing three different people. Kill List is dark and grim viewing. The story pings between the grim reality of the family lives of both soldiers, particularly one who has a wife and son, and the killings they have to carry out, which are bloody and violent. Despite this the story is inevitably laced with atmosphere, fairly well paced, and moves fairly early on away from normality when a strange supernatural dimension is added. My only real gripe with the film is the audio mix, which at times switches between very quiet and important dialogue, and then loud action scenes. I suspect some will find the supernatural overtones and lack of clear story a turn off. Recommended for fans of quirky dark horror e.g. Angel Heart, and The Wicker Man. Those who dislike violence, gore and general weirdness should avoid. 4/5 (Good)
