Film Review: Underworld: Awakening (2012)
Underworld: Awakening (2012). Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. This fourth instalment continues story-wise from the second in the series, Underworld: Evolution. Both Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael Corvin are being pursued by humans and ultimately captured. Selene wakes up 12 years later when she is rescued from a cryogenic suspension chamber within a huge research facility, although it's unclear at first who has saved her. I'm not a fan of the Underworld series, but I have watched the preceding films and found them average at worst. Awakening continues the trend of lots of vampires and lycans (werewolves) fighting, albeit this time with lots of things thrown at the camera (yep, it's one of those 3D films). There was enough of a story, and reasonable pace and action, so that my interest was just about sustained. The first 45 minutes felt better than the rest, up until the inevitable "boss fight" ending. Fans of the series would enjoy it I expect. Those who get turned off by gore and action films should avoid. 3/5 (Average)
