Film Review: John Carter (2012)
John Carter (2012). Directed by Andrew Stanton and based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film starts with the nephew of John Carter visiting his tomb, following his funeral. Carter's journal is given to his nephew by his lawyer, and we then get told Carter's story in flashback. It starts with him in search of gold which he believes is located in a cave, but he cannot find it. Carter is then press ganged by the Confederate army, although he manages to escape and coincidentally ends up finding the cave he has been looking for. Within the cave is an alien, a Thern, which Carter kills. He ends up accidentally transporting himself to Mars via a device the alien was holding. For me John Carter is an odd film, starting with the rather dull title (Princess of Mars or similar would have been much better). It's more planet opera than space opera, and feels a little similar to Flash Gordon, inevitably based on the story. It does a great job of ignoring science fact, as Mars is populated by various species. Also Carter's incredible strength, due to the low gravity, becomes a rather boring deus ex machina. The story and characters are ultimately all rather dull and predictable. Only the CG and strident score are high points. Those who love one dimensional science fiction action might get something from it. 2/5 (Poor)
