Film Reviews: The Dictator (2012)
The Dictator (2012). Directed by Larry Charles. The film starts with Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen (Sacha Baron Cohen), dictatorial caricature of the Republic of Wadiya, being summoned to the UN in New York City. Aladeen is developing nuclear weapons, and the UN have threatened military strikes if he doesn't explain himself. While in New York City he is kidnapped with a view to assassination, but when the attempt fails he is left on the streets with nobody aware of who he is, and he has to survive on his (few) wits. There are two issues with The Dictator. Firstly, if you saw the multitude of trailers then you've seen a lot of the jokes already, and may find the film spoiled. Secondly, the humour is vulgar, to the extreme in places (this is Sacha Baron Cohen after all). If you can get past both of these issues then chances are you'll enjoy the film. There is some reasonable political subtext in there which pokes fun at both the Arabs and the USA. 4/5 (Good)
