Film Review: Looper (2012)
Looper (2012). Written and directed by Rian Johnson. The film is set in the near future. The main character (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) explains that time travel was invented a further 30 years hence, but immediately outlawed. The mob now use it illegally to send back people they want murdered, as it's impossible to murder anyone in their future without repercussions. The main character is a Looper, someone in the near future that is employed to murder these people sent back in time. Looper takes a well visualised future and uses it to tell a fascinating story, with all the inevitable ins and outs of time travel (albeit without beating you over the head with it). The main characters, which also include Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt are all excellently played. Also kudos to those involved with Gordon-Levitt's make up as the similarity to Willis is uncanny. With the exception of one slightly silly sequence and a tenuous backstory, the film is solid, detailed, and well paced. The soundtrack wasn't memorable, but didn't detract or impose. Strongly recommended for any science fiction action fan. 5/5 (Excellent)
