Film Review: Sound of My Voice (2011)
BB Piano
Sound of My Voice (2011). Co-written and directed by Zal Batmanglij. The film is set in present day Los Angeles. Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Cicious) are trying to break into a cult, as part of recording a documentary to discredit them. The cult is run by Maggie (Brit Marling) who says she's from 30 years in the future. Peter and Lorna are allowed to meet Maggie, but only after they are cuffed and blindfolded and driven to a secret location, after which they are required to shower and wear sterile clothing. Sound of my Voice is an odd quantity; it's low budget and at times ridiculous, but this is offset by some intense moments and a great concept. This left me somewhat confused about whether I liked it or not, which was neither helped or hindered by an ending with few answers. Cicious and particularly Denham are great as the conflicted couple. Marling is a mix of both odd and intense, perhaps intentionally, as the cult's leader. Ultimately I just about enjoyed it, but was left wanting more answers. Apparently the film was written as a trilogy, which would supply a lot of the answers, although there are no plans currently to film the next two parts. Those who like their films to be clear cut should avoid. 3/5 (Average)
