Film Review: Mother (2009)
Mother (2009). Co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho. Set in South Korea, the film starts with a somewhat elderly woman (Kim Hye-Ja) dancing in a field. The woman is the mother of Do-joon (Won Bin), who is mentally disabled and picked on by some of the locals. The mother sells herbs, and they both live a poor existence. When a local girl is killed Do-joon is imprisoned for her murder, but his mother is certain that he is innocent, and sets out to prove it. Mother is one of those incredible tales that is centred around a very intimate portrayal of life between just a handful of people, and the effect that a terrible incident has on them all. Kim Hye-ja is excellent as the doting mother, as is Won Bin as the disabled son. There is some violence, but most of the suspense is generated from the atmosphere. Recommended for those who like a mix of drama and thriller, and can cope with the non-mainstream setting. 5/5 (Excellent)
