Film Review: I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006)
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006). Directed by Park Chan-wook. Set in South Korea, the film opens with a young girl, Young-goon, working in an electronics factory. She hears a voice that tells her to cut open her wrist and insert a mains electricity cable, which she does. She survives the experience, but is institutionalised. I'm a Cyborg is a romantic comedy, but a mighty peculiar one. The first hour or so stretched my patience, with little happening by my estimation at least. The second half is more interesting, but I don't think "the journey" or end was satisfying enough to make an enjoyable film. The cast certainly put there all into it though, and the film does have a (very) peculiar charm at times. The CG effects are used well, to convey imaginative and dreamlike scenes. Ultimately it wasn't enough to save it for me. Those who like very odd romantic comedies might get something from it. 2/5 (Poor)
