Film Review: Flight (2012)

Flight (2012). Directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film starts with William "Whip" Whittaker (Denzel Washington) waking up in his hotel room with a naked woman. He drinks, snorts some coke, and then heads off to his day job as a commercial airline pilot. On his flight to Atlanta there's a mechanical failure of the plane, and Whip has to try and save himself, the crew, and the 100+ passengers. Flight is a film of 3 parts. The first is very brief, and ends with the the plane crash. The second is Whip struggling with his alcoholism. The third is also very brief, and a coda of sorts. The bulk of the film is made up of the second part, and felt like a good portrayal of the issues with alcoholism. The only difficulties I had with it were a lack of deeper explanation as to why the central character suffered with the problem, and it was overly long. I also felt Whip's love interest (Kelly Reilly) was more of a distraction than a concrete addition to the story. Those issues aside it was still an interesting film. If you're not a fan of slow gritty drama then you may want to avoid. 3/5 (Good)
