Film Review: Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)
Silent Hill: Revelation (2012). Directed by Michael J Bassett and based on the video game Silent Hill 3. The film follows on from Silent Hill (2006), with Rose (Radha Mitchell) managing to transport her daughter, Sharon, from the alternate reality of Silent Hill into her husband's (Sean Bean) care. Rose has to stay behind to distract those who want Sharon, which leaves both Sharon and her father on the run for many years trying to escape those who are hunting them in the real world. I rather liked the 2006 film, which for me was a rare thing: a horror film with some character and charm, even if it didn't last throughout. I've only ever played the first Silent Hill game, and although it was atmospheric and creepy, I ultimately found it rather frustrating and boring. This sequel is more like the game, and doesn't quite have the charm of the original. In fact the whole film felt distinctly average, with a slightly better first half offset against a duller second half that had less story and never-ending chase sequences. The film is reasonably paced at least, and doesn't linger too long on the various set pieces. Those who don't enjoy horror should avoid, and I suspect a lot of horror fans will find it hokey. 3/5 (Average)
