Film Review: Jack Reacher (2012)
Jack Reacher (2012). Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and based on the novel by Lee Child. The film starts with a man driving up to the top of a building, he pulls out a sniper rifle, and then indiscriminately shoots several people. The man is arrested and interrogated, and hands a piece of paper to the interrogator with "Get Jack Reacher" written on it. Initially I thought Jack Reacher was going to be a dumb action film, but it surprised me after the first few minutes by at least having some story to it. For some reason I kept thinking of Dirty Harry, although Reacher (Tom Cruise) neither has Clint's stature or a similar screen presence. But the character at least is a not-by-the-numbers type who just wants to resolve a situation, by brute force if need be. Overall it's a tidy action film with a fair bit of story that is never particularly good. Fascinating seeing Werner Herzog as a villain though, and he was rather good at least. Recommended for action film fans that don't have particularly high standards and don't mind a bit of story. 3/5 (Average)
