Film Review: The Kid With a Bike (2011)
The Kid With a Bike (2011). Written and directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne. The film starts with Cyril (Thomas Doret), a 12-year old boy, at a foster home. He is desperate to find his dad, and the bike he bought for him, and he escapes briefly. During his escape he ends up at a doctors surgery, where he clings on to a woman in the waiting room, Samantha (Cécile de France). The following day Samantha visits the foster home, having bought his bike from someone selling it in a poor area. The Kid With a Bike is pretty much what the plot summary implies, grim albeit real life-feeling drama. There are the inevitable ups and downs, but mostly downs. The film ends rather abruptly, so those expecting a tied off feel good film will probably want to avoid. I'm not sure I was entertained as such, as although it was a raw honest tale it was all rather predictable. 2/5 (Poor)
