Some technological musings:

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is interesting. You get quite a lot of tablet for £180, despite the 7" screen size. It's my first proper experience of Android, and the environment is certainly OK to use, albeit not always as intuitive as iOS. The home screen(s) equivalent feels more modern than iOS with the widgets. The only real downside is that the tablet is slightly slow, particularly when using the browser, so perhaps a smidge underpowered,. I can certainly live without it as it either does nothing the iPhone does, or it's a feature I don't really need. I'm tied into iOS so it would be hard to move away to say a Galaxy S4, which I like the look of. The biggest problem is related to music, as the iPhone is very much a music hub for me as well. That's bluetooth in the car - which I could probably replicate with the S4 - but also AirPlay at home.

I tried Windows 8 on a VM at work, but got a better taste of it on my BIL's laptop today. It's a mixture of dumbed down Windows with... well, Windows 7. The combination isn't great unless you have a touchpad, and even then the odd switch between desktop and the new start "menu" is jarring. I suspect that's echoing 1,001 reviews out there. If you're using Win 7 on a desktop or laptop without touchscreen I can't see any need to upgrade, as it offers nothing, and is likely to slow you down. Even then I can't see the worth of a touchscreen on a laptop, and the tablets must be confusing things to use with the switch back to desktop mode.
