Film Review: Dark Skies (2013)
Dark Skies (2013). Written and directed by Scott Stewart. The film centres around the Barrett family. The father, Daniel (Josh Hamilton), is unemployed and desperately seeking a job as the bills mount up. The mum, Lacy (Keri Russell), is an estate agent struggling to sell anything. One of the children, Sammy (Kadan Rockett), is having strange dreams about "The Sandman". Odd things start to happen at their house, including vegetables being scattered from the fridge, and items in the kitchen stacked up in geometric shapes. Dark Skies does a somewhat believable job of setting up a family in the current economic crisis. That's about it though in terms of what it does well, as it's just another not-particularly-sophisticated-take on alien abduction. It doesn't even attempt to invent anything new in the genre, referring back to greys etc. It does have a somewhat Paranormal-Activity-with-aliens feel to it, and at least it doesn't use found footage. Only for those that think alien abduction is a fresh medium. You'll definitely be better off watching an episode of the X-Files. 2/5 (Poor)
