Film Review: John Dies at the End (2012)
John Dies at the End (2012). Directed by Don Coscarelli and based on the comic horror novel by Jason Pargin. The film starts with the central character, twentysomething David Wong (Chase Williamson), beheading a zombie with an axe. It then switches to a restaurant where David meets with a reporter (Paul Giamatti) on the basis of telling him his story, which is where the rest of the film is mostly told in flashback. John Dies at the End could be described as Bill & Ted meets Philip K Dick meets stoner comedy, although that still doesn't quite cover it. The story is an odd mix of horror and black comedy, with low-fi special effects. I liked it, in part because it felt somewhat fresh, but those who are put off by low-fi, gore, and/or wacky stories will probably want to give it a skip. 4/5 (Good)
