Film Review: Oblivion (2013)
Oblivion (2013). Co-written and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The story is set in 2077, several years after the Earth was attacked by aliens, known as "Scavs". The Scavs succeeded in blowing up the moon, causing havoc on the Earth and forcing the majority of the population to relocate to Titan. A handful of humanity is left behind to protect vast fusion reactors that are vacuuming up the Earth's oceans and converting them into power for those living on Titan. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is Technician 49, paired with his controller and partner Victoria Olsen (Andrea Riseborough). Both are 2 weeks away from leaving their assignment on the Earth and are due to head to Titan. I thought Oblivion was ostensibly a good film. The story is interesting, even if the science is a little hokey, it's overly long, and has a twist here and there too many. There are great performances from Cruise and Riseborough, albeit the rest of the cast don't get much of a chance to shine. The CG is fantastic. The score is particularly good, but perhaps a bit too strident in quieter scenes. Non-science fictions fans will obviously want to avoid, along with those who baulk at even a smattering of sentimentality. 4/5 (Good)
