Film Review: Maniac (2012)
Maniac (2012). Directed by Frank Khalfoun and a remake of the 1980 film. The film starts with two women leaving a night club. The first gets a taxi home and the second waits for a taxi to come along. After being hassled by a group of men she decides to walk, and has no luck flagging down a second taxi. The view then switches to the first person, as someone follows her home. Said person then attacks her just as she reaches her apartment. The great thing about Maniac is that although it's a horror it's certainly not your average horror. Even though very gory the story is detailed, well paced, looks at why the central character is motivated to do what he does, and all with a dash of the surreal. Elijah Wood is great as the main character within the film, even though you mostly see everything from his first person viewpoint. The 80s style soundtrack is great, and adds further atmosphere and surreality. Recommended for those who can cope with the gore and fancy a horror film that's both deep and different. 4/5 (Good)
