Film Review: Contagion (2011)

Contagion (2011). Directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film starts in Hong Kong with businesswoman (Gwyneth Paltrow) on a trip. She briefly stops over in Chicago to cheat on her husband with an old flame, then returns to her husband (Matt Damon) with what appears to be a cold. Her son then develops symptoms, by which time she has a seizure and dies. Contagion certainly has a full-on cast, with the aforementioned and also Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and more. The problem I had with it though is I cared little for the characters, whether big name actors or not. The story jumps around between various plot lines, which inevitably interweave. The plot lines themselves are hardly gripping, not helped by the lack of character buy in. Ultimately I found it all rather dry, grim, and depressing, unless that's your bag. 2/5 (Poor)
