Film Review: Man of Steel (2013)
Man of Steel (2013). Directed by Zack Snyder and based on the DC Comics character. The film starts on the planet Krypton where Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer) have defied the government and conceived a natural child. Krypton is at the of explosion due to over-harvesting of the planet's core, and Jor-El and Lor-Van plan to try and save their race by sending their baby to another planet - said baby has been infused with a genetic codex of all Kryptonians. I was somewhat torn with Man of Steel. On the one hand it's a so-so heartfelt attempt at retelling the Superman story with some great special effects. On the other hand it's yet-another-Superman-reboot, having had both a prior reboot and TV series subsequent to the original Reeve films. Also it tries to do far too much storywise, for me at least. Despite somewhat engaging characters it still didn't trump the early original Reeve films. Hans Zimmer has provided a strident if somewhat derivative sounding score. For those who can't get enough of comic book films, and probably an average action film for most of the rest. 3/5 (Average)
