Trance (2013). Directed by Danny Boyle. The film starts with Simon Maxwell (James McAvoy), an auctioneer, giving a potted history of how auction houses have had to improve their security over the decades to counter thieves. Whilst he recounts the history several men break in to the building he's at while an auction for a very valuable painting takes place. Trance is heavy on the story, and takes you on a complex but not quite breakneck speed ride with confusion at every turn. There are great performances from all involved, and some unusual direction. It's topped off with a good soundtrack by Rick Smith (one of Underworld). The only real criticism I can find for Trance is that the bewildering story gets a bit too much at times, so those who don't like those sorts of films should avoid. 4/5 (Good)
