Film Review: After Earth (2013)
After Earth (2013). Co-written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The story is set a thousand years in the future after humanity have destroyed Earth through over-pollution and settled on another planet, Nova Prime. The settlers did not realise that other aliens lived on the planet, and said aliens released a genetically engineered creature, the Ursa, to hunt down humans through pheromones produced by their fear. One of the Rangers, an elite group of soldiers, was able to demonstrate no fear and therefore was invisible to the Ursas, and able to destroy them. The story is then told in flashback after this elite ranger and his son are stranded on a planet. For me After Earth wasn't awful, but neither was it particularly good. The film mostly centres around the ranger's son (Jaden Smith) who has to save his wounded father (Will Smith) and himself by finding a beacon that they can summon rescue with. For me the story suffers from a number of problems: it's not very well written, it's overly sentimental and hokey, and ultimately rather boring. Will and Jaden are OK, but their performances aren't helped by the story. The effects are good. Those who don't mind hokey action SF with spartan plots might get something from it. 3/5 (Average)
