Film Review: Pacific Rim (2013)
Pacific Rim (2013). Co-written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. The story is initially set in present day 2013. A dimensional rift forms at the bottom of the Pacific ocean and starts to spill forth Kaiju, huge monsters that attack the land and kill thousands of people. Mankind initially struggles to fight back, but then develops huge monster-sized robots known as Jaegers. The Jaegers cannot be piloted by a single person due to the neural load, so have two pilots that bond mentally using a technology called the Drift. The Jaegers fight the Kaiju for the next 7 years, to the point where mankind thinks it has won. Pacific Rim is pretty much what it says on the tin, a great big silly film with huge robots and monsters. Despite being a dumb action film with a hokey plot it's about as well crafted a one as you'll get, under del Toro's hand. Very much a case of switch off your brain and enjoy. 3/5 (Average)

I had no idea it was a Guillermo del Toro film! I like great big silly films so I'll have to check it out. I think I was avoiding the film because I made some subconscious link to that Battleship film. No idea why - I guess great big bodies of water? Who knows.

I'd also connected it up with Battleship for some reason.
