Film Review: The Order (2003)
The Order (AKA The Sin Eater) (2003). Written and directed by Brian Helgeland. The film opens with an unknown character (Heath Ledger) delivering a monologue about how life is a mystery. The rest of the film is told in flashback. It initially starts in Rome with Catholic priest Dominic. He appears to be taking communion, but then an unknown man in a suit enters his house, and some supernatural event takes place. The central problem with The Order for me was a story that was spread too thinly. There are some beautiful sets, lovely cinematography, and some great actors (although Ledger is one of the weaker ones), but without sufficient story to bring them altogether it all feels a bit wasted. It feels like a combination of The Prophecy and Angel Heart (among others), but certainly was nowhere near as good as the latter for me. For supernatural film fans that are stuck for something to watch. 3/5 (Average)
