Film Review: Red 2 (2013)
Red 2 (2013). Based on the DC Comic and directed by Dean Parisot. The film continues from Red (2010), with Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), ex-CIA agent, and his normal(ish) girlfriend Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker) trying to live a normal life. Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich), Frank's friend and also an ex-CIA agent, pops up in the middle of a supermarket and warns them they're being followed. Frank dismisses it, but when Marvin gets into his car it explodes. I feel pretty much the same way about Red 2 as I do about Red, that it's a sort of paint-by-numbers action film despite the heavyweight cast. To some degree there's some pretty good acting, from such luminaries as Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Brian Cox. Malkovich is also brilliant as the quirky Boggs. But for me at least a rather dull story about lost nuclear weapons holds the film back from being anything other than OK. Inevitably recommended for fans of the first film, and perhaps a rainy day action film for the rest of us. 3/5 (Average)
