Film Review: The Rum Diary (2011)
The Rum Diary (2011). Based on the novel by Hunter S Thompson and directed by Bruce Robinson. Set in 1960 Puerto Rico, the story centres around the journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Kemp, a near alcoholic, has just arrived in Puerto Rico having gained a position at the newspaper for the island. He quickly makes friends with another alcohol sodden journalist, Bob Sala (Michael Rispoli), and they go on a drinking binge. I was intrigued by The Rum Diary after discovering that it was Depp himself that encouraged Thompson to publish the book, after they made friends during the filming of Fear and Loathing. Sadly the film isn't that similar to Fear and Loathing, nor is it particularly good in its own right. Depp's character wavers between heartthrob and alcoholic, and it just doesn't stack up. At times he even seems to be channelling Raoul Duke. The core story is rather dull, and the remaining characters aren't enough to shore it up. It's hard to know who to recommend the film to, but perhaps an alcoholic that enjoys romance. 2/5 (Poor)
