Film Review: The Babadook (2014)
The Babadook (2014). Written and directed by Jennifer Kent. The film opens with the main character (Essie Davis) having a nightmare, relating to when her husband died several years earlier in a car accident. The sound of her son (Noah Wiseman) calling her wakes her from the nightmare. Ordinarily I steer away from horror of late because films just rely on violence and nastiness. The Babadook thankfully doesn't rely on this formula and instead tells more of a ghost story, albeit one that is laden with atmosphere and scares. Both of the main actors are excellent and convincing. The cinematography is also excellent, portraying an almost hyper-real environment. Recommended for fans of horror without the violence, and with a focus on story. 4/5 (Good)
