Film Review: A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)

A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014). Based on the novel by Lawrence Block and directed by Scott Frank. The film is initially set in 1991. Detective Matthew Scudder (Liam Neeson) is in a car with another detective, and they are arguing. His partner is worried about whether Scudder is capable of working with him, to which Scudder is less than helpful in response. Scudder leaves the car and walks across to a nearby bar. He gets brought two shots and a coffee. Two men enter the bar and after an argument with the owner they shoot him. Scudder chases after the men, killing one of them, and another waiting in a car outside. He then shoots the third in the leg. A Walk Among the Tombstones is pretty grim viewing, but the story is mostly good. There are some odd moments though that don't quite tie up, and also some loose ends. Neeson isn't exactly challenged much playing a grizzled cop, but there's quite a large supporting cast that are good also. Overall it's a good crime drama for non-sensitive types. 4/5 (Good)
