Film Reviews: The Man With the Iron Fists (2012) & The Sky Crawlers (2008)

The Man With the Iron Fists (2012). Written and directed by RZA. The film is set in 19th century China. Initially we get a monologue from the blacksmith in a place called Jungle Village. The blacksmith gets plenty of work because of warring clans that constantly struggle to rule there. The blacksmith is saving up though to buy the freedom of a local prostitute, so that they can then both leave. The Man With the Iron Fists is a less serious take on something like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but still plenty of fun. The story is interesting and moves along at a reasonable pace. There are plenty of action sequences. There's an interesting and unusual cast. The soundtrack isn't exactly to my taste, with lots of rap music, which seems somewhat incongruous for a film set in 19th century China (yes, I know who RZA is, but even so). All-in-all an enjoyable watch, if a not so serious historical martial arts film is your thing. 4/5 (Good)

The Sky Crawlers (2008). Based on the novel by Hiroshi Mori and directed by Mamoru Oshii. Set in an alternative history Earth, young pilots employed by corporations battle in the skies as an alternative to war. I don't have an awful lot to say about The Sky Crawlers as I found it incredibly dull. There's a lot of very fine plot detail, but I couldn't have cared a jot about any of the characters, so wasn't invested at all. The animation is nice, and that was about the only thing I enjoyed. If you like anime that's light on action and significant plot then this is the film for you. 1/5 (Awful)
