Film Review: Cashback (2006)

Cashback (2006). Written and directed by Sean Ellis. The film centres around Ben Willis (Sean Biggerstaff) who is in his final year at art college. His girlfriend Suzy (Michelle Ryan) breaks up with him and he finds he is unable to sleep, at all. To cope with his sleepless nights he starts working the night shift at Sainsbury's. On the one hand Cashback gives an insight into the life of a somewhat sensitive male twentysomething, who philosophises to varying degrees on a variety of semi-interesting and not so interesting topics. There's also a particularly clever fantasy idea, but it treads a fine line between art and just gratuitous nudity, and arguably veers more towards the latter (you could argue this also features heavily in the twentysomething male mindset). Mixed in with that are some black comedy elements, playing on the banality and stupidity of everyday life. Finally, there's a thread about relationships that runs throughout the film. Ultimately the story just about sustained my interest, but not much more. If you don't mind the mix of ideas and the subject matter then you might get something from it. 3/5 (Average)
