Film Review: Dead Man Down (2013)

Dead Man Down (2013). Written by JH Wyman and directed by Niels Arden Oplev. The film opens with two members of a criminal gang chatting to each other. Darcy (Dominic Cooper) is holding his baby son and philosophising about life to Victor (Colin Farrell). He gives the baby to his girlfriend, and then Darcy is paged by the gang boss, Alphonse (Terrence Howard). Victor and Darcy are called to Alphonse's house, where one of the gang members has been found, murdered. It transpires that the gang are being picked off one by one, and strange notes are left with the bodies, along with pieces of a photo. I wasn't expecting much from Dead Man Down, so was pleasantly surprised when for me it turned out to be a solid thriller. There are a set of interesting characters which go beyond one dimension and you care about appropriately, including a character played by the excellent Noomi Rapace (although she's more than in danger of being typecast as the troubled female). The plot moves along well, and although you hope the good guys will win there are sufficient twists and turns to make it interesting. Recommended for fans of crime thrillers who aren't enormously picky. 4/5 (Good)
