Film Reviews: The Voices (2014)
The Voices (2014). Written by Michael R Perry and directed by Marjane Sartrapi. Jerry Hickfang (Ryan Reynolds) has been working several months at a bathtub factory, having been released from a mental hospital where he spent his adult life to-date. Unfortunately he's not taking the medication recommended by his court appointed psychiatrist and believes his cat and dog are talking to him. On paper I would have expected to enjoy The Voices more, a black comedy about someone with mental health issues. There are a few positives, including an oddly young looking Ryan Reynolds who puts in a great performance, along with a great supporting cast. The film is quirky in a good way and has some charm to it. Unfortunately for me the story just felt too thinly spread and predictable to be really enjoyable, albeit with an unexpected ending. Also I the film treads and crosses a fine line between black comedy and BLACK comedy. Those who like their comedy REALLY black might get something from it. 3/5 (Average)
