I posted this over at livejournal_uk, but I'm interested to see what my LJ friends think also. I'm bound to have missed an option or two.

i actually met my (now) husband on matchmaker.com... and we've been together for over 7 years now.
it's pretty much a crapshoot though, seems to me. you can meet some nice people, but you can also meet some scary/creepy ones just as easily.

I didn't have much luck with dating sites. The one I used no-one seemed interested in actual dating!

The IRC option is missing out of the second question and how did that second interview go?

Oops.

I posted a couple of hours back about the interview, should be down there in the archive somewhere...

Oops from me too then, I'll go looking ;)

In summary: it were all a bit weird.

Re: IM, don't you have to already know someone to IM them?

Normally, but this can be just as friends. You might end up in falling in love over IM (within reason). Happened to me.

hey this is weird badasstronaut is a friend of my friend miss_jen and i saw blob had replied to one of your polls. blob is a friend of lemons. haha. i just think that's weird coz i friended you because of your involvement in a computer community. you always seemed to have good answers and were always polite and helpful.

It's a small LiveJournal world ;-) I used to be friended by miss_jen (and seattle_liz) but was unfriended when I discussed a topic they didn't like.

LiveJournal, duh!

Yep, I can't believe I forgot that :-)

I was introduced by a mutal friend on another journal/diary website. Neither of us have ever met this mural friend, but it was a million times more successful than all the dating websites I tried.

Journals led to IM, which led to phone calls, which led to face to face meeting, which led to dating, which led to living together. Woo hoo!

Met my truelove in IRC EFNET #truthdare November 95. Dated her by IRC chat, email, and phone. Met her in real life 10 years ago today. We're married now and have a son. We now use dedicated sites, email, and IM for dating (swinging).

*daha*

I've specifically looked for dates on several different web sites. The only people I've met online and enjoyed dating (including my partner, with whom I've been for 10 years this summer) became friends online (usually IRC or email lists), and ended up dating after we became "real life" friends.

i put 'Dedicated Web Sites e.g. uDate' for the most successful because although the others have been useful in dating they have never initiated the process.

You forgot good ol' Usenet. I met my husband on soc.penpals over 11 years ago. :-)

Ah yes, someone mentioned Usenet on livejournal_uk. I've used Usenet a lot, but never for dating. I was kinda surprised that people use/used it for that, but on retrospect I guess it makes sense.

I think Usenet is great. So much better than the bandwidth heavy web.
